ODEX strikes back

Read in the HWZ forums that a Singnet user has recieved a “love letter” from the local law firm, Rajah & Tann, representing ShowGate Inc from Japan. Well, looks like the shit has hit the ceiling fan, quite literally. If this goes to the courts, and a landmark case is set, it spells doom on all anime lovers in Singapore.

Apparently, not only Singnet users have been hit, but Starhub users have received the letter as well, and not just only from ShowGate, but also Geneon Entertainment Inc as well. For a detailed story, and a background of the whole saga, check out this blog

The online anime community is set buzzing with discussions again when someone posted on various forums about a lawyer letter sent to him on behalf of Showgate Inc. by Rajah and Tann Transnational Legal Solutions.

It was said on forums that the anime “Devil May Cry” was downloaded using Bit Torrent and the information was captured by Singnet with the request from Showgate Inc. Singnet is one of the ISPs in Singapore.

However, in 2007, Odex added the names of the real six Japanese copyright holders to its case (GDH, Kadokawa Pictures, Showgate, Sunrise, TV Tokyo MediaNet and Yomiuri Telecasting) which, it turns out, was a smart move. Although Justice Woo Bih Li denied Odex a chance to see the records, the real copyright holders are in a position to sue – so he granted them full access to the records instead.
