The Chinese New Year Experience
Jan 27th
Actually, I wasn’t intending to write something about my CNY experience in this blog, but since I wrote something in response to Jocelyn’s post in her blog. I thought I should just put it here as well.
“Don’t you think that actually each year when you grow more mature, CNY gets more and more dull and boring? The thrills of meeting strangers(relatives) start to die down and the food that you used to eat only during CNY can be bought anywhere. + the repetition of the same old CNY songs each year just irritates you further. I don’t hate CNY, where I can get a holiday to relax and enjoy. But to celebrate excessively is a nono”
In short…
Don’t you agree that CNY is no longer as important in our hearts as it has been 3-5 years ago? Well, that’s my opinion. What’s yours?
I would be grateful if anyone would drop me a comment on your opinions.
Alright, time for me to go offline.
Ciao!

AIG kicks off sale of AIA?
Jan 22nd
American International Group Inc
The U.S. insurer sent a sales memorandum for American International Assurance to a group of selected potential bidders, the newspaper quoted “people close to the situation” as saying.
AIG declined comment on the report.
The Financial Times said AIA is regarded as a jewel in AIG’s crown. It has 20 million policyholders in 13 countries and last year made an aggregate operating profit of about $2 billion.
Analysts estimate the sale of a minority stake could fetch up to $20 billion, it said.
The newspaper said AIG had sought bids for 49 percent of AIA, but would be willing to look at offers for the entire unit. AIG could also opt for a full listing of the division if it does not achieve a high enough price, the report said.
Prospective bidders include China Life <601628.SS>, HSBC
Canada’s Manulife Financial
First-round bids are due towards the end of February, it said.
AIG, once the world’s biggest insurer by market value, averted bankruptcy in September with an $85 billion federal government bailout. The rescue later swelled to about $152 billion.
AIG has said it plans to sell everything except its U.S. property and casualty business, foreign general insurance, and an ownership interest in some foreign life operations.

Taiwanese University Opens Porn Course
Jan 22nd
A university in Taiwan has opened a course to teach students how to appreciate and analyse porn movies.
The Mass Communication Department of Providence University opened the course this semester, reports United Daily News.
To pass the course, students must give a 15 minute presentation in which they analyse an audience’s psychological reaction to a porn clip from an academic perspective.
One worried student, who did not wish to be named, commented: “If I get a very good score in this course, I don’t know how I’ll explain it to my parents.”
When registering for the voluntary course, students signed a paper agreeing that if the scenes were too explicit, they could choose to leave the classroom
The teacher, assistant professor Miss Chen Mingmei, said no students had ever left her class but some would briefly cover their eyes during the stronger scenes.
More than 50 students registered for the course, and most of them confessed that they had watched porn videos before.
Curiosity was given as the main reason for taking the course and most admitted their parents did not know what they were studying.
Another student admitted: “I am really worried my parents will see the score report when it is mailed home. I won?t know what to say if I get a high score
“However if I fail the course, I can speak to my parents and suggest that maybe I should watch more porn.”

Singapore opposition leader appeals to Obama on rights
Jan 22nd

The leader of a Singapore opposition party, jailed numerous times for defying local protest laws and for other offences, has posted a video message asking for US President Barack Obama’s support.
Chee Soon Juan, secretary general of the Singapore Democratic Party, posted his “message to President Obama” on the video sharing website YouTube, where he called Obama’s Tuesday inauguration “an occasion of great moment.”
Chee expressed hope that the United States “will pay more attention to the human rights abuses of the Singapore government and take positive steps to help Singapore join the community of democracies.”
Chee, dressed in a dark suit and a tie, sat at a desk to deliver the message lasting more than five minutes.
He said his party was especially encouraged by what Obama, the first black president of the United States, has said about human rights.
“Under your leadership I look forward to a world that is freer, more democratic and more just,” said Chee.
He is one of the few Singaporeans who have publicly spoken against Singapore’s People’s Action Party, which has ruled since 1959.
Since independence in 1965, Singapore has grown from a Third World country to an Asian economic powerhouse. But critics say this has come at a price, in the form of restrictions on freedom of speech and political activity.
The ruling party has all but two of the 84 elected seats in parliament, and the opposition’s complaints include a lack of access to mainstream media in the country.
Except for a park that serves as a designated area for limited free speech, it is illegal to hold a public gathering of five or more people in Singapore without a police permit.
Singapore’s leaders say tough laws against dissent and other political activity are necessary to ensure the stability which has helped the city-state achieve economic success.
The government has said allegations that Singapore fails to meet international standards for political and human rights are without substance.
